She looked up towards the night sky and marveled. “How beautiful it must be to live with the moon,” she whispered.
“I don’t know. I like the sun, the colors it makes as it wakes up and settles into bed,” he explained.
“The sun is beautiful in her own right,” she agreed. “But the sun performs for everyone to see. Everyone judges her colors in the morning, her temperature in the afternoon, and her display in the evening. The moon though…the moon performs for no one. The stars appear as they wish. The moon does not need to be whole or even a thin line for people to marvel at. She shows up without having to perform, without judgement.”
He looked at the woman beside him. At her hair blowing in the nighttime breeze. At her stunning moonlit profile. “You like the moon.”
“I do,” she nodded.
“You don’t have to perform,” he told her softly. “You don’t have to perform for me. Just show up as you are, and I will be there waiting and marveling. I will wait every day to see you just as you are, just as you want to be.”
Swallowing the emotions welling inside her, she turned to him. “I was only talking about the moon.”
“Still,” he said, never removing his eyes from hers, “I will be here, marveling, not at the sun or moon…but at you.”
She looked at him, into his blue eyes, and there she saw something bigger than both the sun or the moon. There she saw love.
