The turn of the calendar brings a slow release through my bones. A settling in of something familiar, something missed. As summer dances with autumn in the cool mornings marked by subtly changing leaves and the high temperatures of the afternoon giving birth to sunburnt shoulders, I am reminded that September lies somewhere in between.
Dear September, please be gentle with us.
I crave a gentleness as summer gives us her last show, before she takes her final bow and passes the torch to autumn. I long for an ease into the heavy scent of hearty stews, into the sound of crunching leaves beneath our feet, into the whisper of the wind as it plays in my hair. I want to be only here, in the now, seeking out today. So, my plea to September is to be gentle with us, to sweep us slowly into falls embrace.
As the last remnants of summer fade away and autumn swoons us with a display of colors and comforts us with an array of deeply missed foods, September is there to bridge the seasons. To hold together the memories of yesterday and reach out for the new beginnings of tomorrow. September is there to remind us just how quickly we can go from one side of the bridge to the other, without ever looking back. However, I want to walk leisurely over the bridge, I do not want rushed across. I want only to be here, now, today. I want to see the change happen slowly. So…
Dear September, be gentle with us.
